Job Title: Language Services Manager
Location: In-Person/Hybrid (preferably located in NYC for occasional visits to our office or events)
Organization: Refugee Translation Project (RTP)
Reports To: Executive Director
Employment Type: Part-time (2-3 days/week)

Compensation: $30 to $35 per hour dependant on experience

About Us:
The Refugee Translation Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to helping refugees transition to a life of safety and security by providing free language services to people seeking asylum and other immigration relief, increasing access to vital resources, and creating employment opportunities for asylum seekers. As we grow, we seek to expand our team with a compassionate, organized, and culturally sensitive Language Services Manager to oversee our language service operations. This role will directly support our mission by ensuring that we continue to provide exceptional services to our clients and partners, allowing us to expand and build capacity.

Position Overview:
The Language Services Manager will be responsible for supervising the work of RTP’s translators and interpreters to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and quality. The Language Services Manager will coordinate translation projects, schedule interpretation appointments, copy edit finished English translations, format translated documents, and complete other language services-related tasks. This role requires strong project management skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of trauma-informed approaches to both client and team interactions. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Translation Quality Assurance:
    • Proofread translations that have been translated into English 
    • Review the formatting of translations before they are returned to clients and make necessary corrections or improvements.
    • Develop and implement quality control processes to maintain high standards in our language services.
  • Team and Resource Management:
    • Assign translation and interpretation requests to appropriate team members based on skills, language expertise, and availability.
    • Manage the scheduling and prioritization of translation projects to ensure timely completion.
    • Oversee our team of translators and interpreters, providing guidance, support, and training (if necessary) to improve team performance and maintain high-quality standards.
  • Client Interaction:
    • Serve as the point of contact for clients requesting translation services, ensuring that requests are handled in a timely and respectful manner.
    • Recognize the unique challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers.
    • Maintain strong, empathetic relationships with clients to ensure their needs are met and their voices are heard.
    • Adhere to strict client confidentiality
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Stay informed about the latest developments in language access and translation practices to continuously improve the organization’s services.
  • Other language-related tasks: 
    • Take on other tasks as assigned including, but not limited to, translating documents, proofreading translations in languages other than English, creating language glossaries, and assisting in fundraising and outreach efforts. 

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • At least 2 years of experience in language services, copy editing, project management, or applicable field, with at least 1 year in a managerial or supervisory role.
    • Experience working with refugees, asylum seekers, or other vulnerable populations is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in managing projects and schedules, with a focus on quality and efficiency.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse teams and clients.
    • An understanding of multiple languages is strongly preferred
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar office software.
    • A proactive and solutions-oriented approach, with the ability to take initiative and work independently.
    • Commitment to the mission of language access and social justice.
